Diva? Why Not Diva?
Friday, January 20, 2012
There's a girl I follow on Twitter that had a tweet come through that said, "you're NOT a Diva." So natch I had to read it. You know, with the paranoia that sometimes comes with bipolar, she HAD to be talking about me, right? After all, she does follow me too.
My, oh my. Girl is seriously pissed about people calling themselves "Diva." She states the word itself "annoys the shit," out of her and that she would love to "punch them in the throat," and "I sure as Hell won't take anyone seriously that calls themself a diva." Wow.
First of all "themself," is not a word. "Themselves," if you're wondering why I used that word in the last paragraph, is a word and is used when a compound subject has been used in the sentence to show that it refers to the same group.
Furthermore why is the mere word so annoying to someone? I guess it could be poor self esteem or envy maybe. Still can't figure that one out.
I kinda felt I had to defend myself, then I thought, "Would a Diva do that?" Hell no, she'd hire someone to do that. So I decided to pay a kid to transcribe this for me.
Fact is there are really a lot of reasons people may use that term. Mine is tongue and cheek. I mean, HELLO, I'm freaking CRAZY, how on earth could I be perfect? It's called an OXYMORON, ya know when you combine two contradictory terms? Kinda like "bipolar," and "Diva."
It's also a nickname I've had for years for trying to keep it together and look ok on the outside while I'm fighting this insidious disorder. Fact is I kind of act like it to cover for the insecurities in my life, over compensate I guess you can say.
I did write a post a while back comparing the two terms, "bipolar," and "Diva." I think it's pretty explanatory. Truth be told, the two terms do have a lot in common: grandiose ideas, spending, self absorption, etc. I think my psychiatrist would call those traits "psychosis."
I don't think a "real" Diva, whatever that is, would write a post basically telling the world what a failure she was. Yep, hand up. That was me.
Yes, I hide behind a lot of materialistic things, but I know why I hide. I hide because to look myself in the mirror and realize the hand I've been dealt, and passed on to my daughter, is a bit too much to handle most of the time.
But that's just it, I hide from myself. If you've read through my blog, even sporadically, you'll see I'm open and honest with the world about my short comings.
She has a right to her opinion, as we all do in this great nation of ours, but seriously, try to figure out if it's really just a play on words before condemning someone.
Now, I'm off to have a bubble bath drawn for me and my pinky toe nail re-painted because I chipped it when I was trying on Louboutins this afternoon.
And before bed I'll down my hand full of anti psychotics with nice glass of Cristal that has been delivered to me in a crystal glass on a silver platter by the white gloved minions.

Isn't it funny how upset people get, and then make fools of themselves with their unintelligible rants? It does make you want to rant back, but holding back... that's what makes you the diva! I could never refer to myself as a diva, simply because, like you said, I don't have the esteem for that. LOL... people would look at me and laugh!
I hide behind material items too... although, I'm not so sure it's hiding as much as it is shopping therapy.
I found an interesting blog today... I like how she talked about being a mess on the inside, and that her insides and outside just didn't match.Your post made me think about that. SO she felt she was living a lie, because she wasn't being honest about how imperfect her life was. She started her blog, and apparently confessed all to her entire church... it may be a bit over-religious, but I think her description fits so many of us!!! It's why I love your posts... you're honest!!!
Oh and by the way:
I just say the phrase "You're projecting," is a lesbian term, because my first g/f used it on me ALL the time. The second one too... I decided they were pretty f'd up ;) NOT because of the phrase, but because they were!! ;)
they do end up making fools of themselves. it's too bad really. you'll have to send me the link to that blog if you have it. glad you cleared up the projecting thing....it had me scratching my head! lol
Haha! I think it was probably more about the word "diva", only a true Diva would assume that every silly tweet was all about her! Hehe!
She can be thankful and I am thankful that you made no mention of using your collection of guns on her. Whew!
Love you!
hehe....I guess i nailed myself!
For the record, you are a Diva, and we, your readers, are your Divatees — or something like that. (I know there is a word which is close to that, but at this hour of the day, I cannot exactly recall, especially when I'm half-hibernating.)
I think, whoever she is, that it would be helpful for her if she pretended she were a Bear and had a good winter's sleep. She could wake up in the spring with a fresh view of the world and maybe, just maybe, live happily ever after.
But what does a Bear know about anything? Really?
LOL!! LOL!!! OH my where to start? I love it all in this post. I so agree, we tend to let material things fill the voids we feel (often sub-consciously) Ok sometimes consciously ... but Retail Therapy can me more gentle on the budget than a one hour session and at least we have something we can hold/touch afterwards.
Having been called "Princess" much of my life ... I find Diva a grown up description for Princess. I love that you to are able to look at the word "tongue and cheek" ... and anyone that has an issue with these word(s) ... well there is something deeper than a dislike of a word ... and who cares what someone is called or chooses to use as description for themselves, lifestyle or life!!
I'll love to discuss this more ... but my chauffeur is waiting to drive me to "Princess to Diva" training ... so I'll catch up with you at Tavern on the Green later...
Wishing you a wonderful day! Blessings, xo HHL
She picked on the wrong chick.
One question....Did she respond? OF COURSE NOT!!!
I really thought that making fun of our own idiosyncrasies was why we started writing a blog in the first place. So we can call ourselves anything we want to. I mean I have Mad Mind, right?
Minions aka grubby handed children haha
Hope things are going well at casa diva!
I think you are a Diva. And I love you for it. So there tweeter girl. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.
1. You have the right to be called "Diva."
2. You earned it.
3. Nobody gives a shit about somebody who does not like that word.
4. Do not defend your "Diva-
ness"
5. That tweeter chick is just envious that she is too boring... and couldn't possiby EVER be termed a Diva.
6. Sending kisses from MN.xxxx
The entire polar opposite feeling of the words "bipolar" and "diva" (although you're right, there's that whole grandiosity thing going for both) go to show your humor at yourself and fun with a play on words. Besides, you're crazy! ;-) Who can beat that?! LOL
I can't believe this girl got so upset over a word. I mean, I guess the word Diva isn't my favourite word either but I wouldn't dislike you just because you call yourself a diva and can't see why anybody else would do the same, that's just ridiculous. Diva implies that you're exciting and maybe the girl just can't stand that, I wouldn't worry though!
yeah, I don't get it. It's just a play on words. Oh well, to each his own.
Themselves is a word. I can prove it because it's right there in your blog.
Only non Divas try to convince a real Diva she's not a Diva. It's because they know they're not Divas themselves.
That girl has got to get a LIFE! To be THAT upset over a WORD! Sorry (no never mind, I'm not sorry) to say she is an IDIOT!
The only "Diva" that really really annoys me is one much like Niecey? I don't know how to spell her name. She is like a host on some shows on TLC or whatever. The way she "diva"s herself is plain annoying. Makes me change the channel. But I encounter other divas in my life that I absolutely love. You're right to each their own. *shrugs*
Whenever people make stupid tweets and generalizations like that, I'm reminded of the following:
The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt.
~Bertrand Russell~
You are a Diva in the grandest sense of the word. No need to sully yourself in a twitter battle with someone who hasn't a clue.
Just tell her you've got an overwhelming desire to punch in the throat people who use the word "themself."
And you've every right to be a diva.
playing catch up--its been a crazy couple of months here. Your an inspiration Diva Diva Diva...with bipolar!
I must say I absolutely adore your writing, your honesty and well.. you! To date, no one has challenged my assertion that I'm the Queen of the monarchy in my own head - and I hope they don't as I wouldn't quite know how to articulate my defense... but to each their own, yes? I love your Diva-ness and couldn't agree more with some of the other comments ~ no need to defend yourself just because someone pissed in that gal's Cheerios! xo
I have had similar experiences with people just not getting the concept of tongue in cheek and using a nickname to cope with something that is less than perfect, but also not the end of the world. Since I first started communicating with the online world I have been MoodyEve. It is a nickname I chose as a joke to make fun of the fact that I have a diagnosed mood disorder but that essentially I am still just Eve. I am not saying I am more moody than the next person, or that moodiness is uniquely mine.... What is funny is that while people love the name and embrace it to my face, when the chips are down and I (shock horror gasp!) have a thought they can't relate to, or disagree with someone, or even just admit to any normal human failings, they throw it back in my face like acid, expecting it to burn away at the fact that I have a mind of my own, and somehow set me apart as being less entitled to think for myself. People use it to do the very thing I tried to speak up against by choosing it. Stigmatise. I recently had a situation where I ended up banned from a mummy's forum online and the main reason they used to have a go at me was my name. I have had people post on my facebook profile such attacks as, "Well, with a first name like Moody what would we expect but such nonsense." (which might not seem like much of an attack but when one takes it in the context of the issue at hand one can see it really is)
I even recently had a friend say to me in an IM that I should take it easy on my partner - who was acting like an ass - "because he has a hard life, it's not easy living with someone called moody".
Keep up your good work honey. You give me hope that things will eventually change. Until they do we can just live out loud and throw caution to the wind. Don't give up who you are because someone has a problem with who they are.
The things haters will say! "Diva" is a state of mind. If you know you're a diva (which you do), keep owning it! And don't get upset over a hater! =)
Well well. I feel at home reading your blog! I really am a diva - an operatic one that is. I congratulate you on your admissions of shoe obsession and credit card outage!
I write anonymously about being mental and attempting my career. No husband or kids yet, but perhaps i'll adopt myself one day. You have such beautiful children.
Keep it going - your're great!
