Totally Weird

Thursday, October 27, 2011

It was weird, like half my brain was asleep along with half of my face and my right eye wouldn't open all the way.

Let's see, weird headache, numbness in the face, eye droop......means call the doctor! They couldn't get me in, not sure why I didn't call 911, but I ended up in Urgent Care. They promptly transferred me to the hospital emergency department for a stroke evaluation.

As soon I got to the hospital, there were people all around me. Questions, needles, medications, and more questions.

Then the ED doc came in, she'd been reading my chart, and asked if I had a psychiatrist. WTF?

"Uh, yeah," I said while thinking, "what in the hell does that have to do with a possible stroke?"

"Well, good, but I want to assure you that I don't think this is a psychotic episode."

Well no shit! It's funny when they look in my chart the first thing they go to is "bipolar" and think I must be experiencing something psychotic. BULLSHIT!

Then there were CT scans, with and without contrast, x-rays, cords, machines, everything they could think of. In between all that excitement there were two shots of Dilaudid. That shit's satanic!

After all the narcotics I really couldn't understand what anyone was saying, but I remember them trying to give me the "touch my finger, touch your nose" test and I failed miserably, no shit, I was totally wasted at that point.  That's when they told me they were admitting  me to the stroke unit to be monitored.

When I got settled in a room I kept hearing all this shouting. It was coming from doctors and nurses. I remember asking the kids why everyone was so loud in the hallway. That's when they informed me that all the patients in the unit were well over a hundred years old and probably deaf.

Then it hit me.....possible stroke.....well over a hundred....OMG! I've never felt old before, but I sure as hell did then.

After awhile the doc came in, said my scans all looked good and said he wasn't sure what happened. It could have been a TIA, but he wasn't sure. Awesome. Good scans, doc not sure. Not feeling so great about things at that point.

So what's next? Doctor's appointments all day yesterday, one tomorrow and three on Monday. I guess we'll know more in the next few days.

Until then I'll just wait and try not to feel so old.

Oh no! What a trauma! Hope it all works out, but at least you've got some investigations going on now.

I know what you mean about the Medical Community judging based on you mental illness. I often try to evaluate just how truthful I need to be before I tell them I'm on anti-depressants, because I don't want them to dismiss whatever I have as a mental illness and not a physical one!
Hope you're feeling better.

I hope they find out what happened. When I first started having migraines I thought they might be mini-strokes.

Oh my gosh! That is SO SCARY! I'm glad you're okay - and hope all the tests come back that this was just something freaky and not any type of stroke! Take extra super good care of yourself! Will be thinking of you!

MarkD60 October 28, 2011 at 4:32 AM

I hope you're OK.
I was going to say it sounds like a normal morning for me....

I have been there and done that and guess what it was.. No seriously guess. Something my CHIROPRACTOR fixed. There are nerves all along your spine that control every part of your body along with feeling and response. There is one at the base of your skull that if it gets pinched can cause exactly what you experienced. Starting with the headache. Because odds are if the nerve is pinched so is the artery to the brain compromised. A quick trip to him when my whole face went numb and we were back in business. Telling you it is NOTHING God has got this baby girl.

Oh, I am so sorry all this is happening to you. I hope they are able to figure out what happened. All the best.

Darcie (My Modern Country) October 28, 2011 at 7:35 AM

Oh my gosh-how scary! Will be thinking about you, and looking forward to hearing "good news"

As for the "feeling old" shit...well, my 49 yr. old self is in serious denial :)

Furry Bottoms October 28, 2011 at 8:09 AM

I remember going to the ER for a migraine one time and the doctor wanted to test me for meningitis. WTF?! I don't know what they think they know that we don't...

I sure hope you are okay!!

Yikes! I was diagnosed with high cholesterol about a year ago. It runs in the family. I was hit with my own mortality at that point. It was not pleasant. I do hope they find out what caused this episode. Let me know.

Just Two Chicks October 28, 2011 at 9:55 AM

Oh no! I'm finally able to take some time out for reading my favorite blogs, and I read this! I'm sorry.

TIA's are scary...
The wife has symptoms similar to TIA's often, but this is her MS flaring up. The only things she doesn't have is the drooping. If she had that too, she'd be going in to the hospital ER as well!

Please let me know how you're doing... stress is a great source of TIA symptoms, by the way!

Scary, scary stuff. Hope you're making your family treat you like the Diva that you are this weekend!

Pat October 28, 2011 at 7:05 PM

Wow - that's scary! Could it be Bell's Palsy? I sure hope they get to the bottom of this! I'll pray for you!

Allyson & Jere October 28, 2011 at 7:15 PM

Certainly glad it WASN'T a stroke. Good grief, you sure know how to NEVER have a dull moment around there, don't ya. Hopefully they'll figure it out soon and you can get back to feeling like your sexy self!

Claudya Martinez October 28, 2011 at 8:44 PM

Oh, no. Keeping you in my thoughts.

Susie - Walking Butterfly October 28, 2011 at 10:35 PM

Wow, so sorry to read this! That is so scary, but gotta say Honey child, you ain't old!

Do not know why I just wrote that in such a strange accent! Ha! And if you are old, then sign me up for it cause you are doing great. You are active, sharp and busy, involved in the lives of others and writing and riding all over the place!

Love to you. Blowing kisses from Minnesota. xxx

Good grief! That's plain scary. Stay tenacious and make sure those docs work their asses off to check everything out. You are way too young to be having any brushes with old-age stuff.

Here's hoping you have a clean bill of health long before your kids find out about it - you could probably milk that pampering thing a bit. Seriously though, hope all goes well with the tests.

The Bipolar Diva October 29, 2011 at 4:39 PM

Thanks everyone! So far things seem to be going much better. Should know more Monday or Tuesday. My doctor thinks it was nothing to worry about, just maybe an atypical migraine. All that poking and prodding for nothing!

Rob-bear October 29, 2011 at 8:46 PM

Seriously scary stuff, Diva. Went through that with J, and it was a TIA. Made for changes in our household.

Hope you get whatever it was sorted out.

Major blessings and lots of Bear hugs.

You're not old..you're fabulous, gorgeous, amazing...which is probably why you got hit with something bad. (All the good ones do!)

Been wondering about you...keep me posted honey! Crossing fingers it was just a migraine!

larainydays October 31, 2011 at 8:50 PM

I hope whatever it is or was is over and done with. Prayers going your way.

highheeledlife November 1, 2011 at 2:05 AM

OMYGOSH..I hope that you are OK .. and it was just a fluke of something ...stay strong!! as for being old ... you were the youngest there; don't overlook the silver lining!! keeping you in thought in prayer - that the doctors will discover the source, the not knowing is the worst...when you know what something is - dealing with it is possible!! wishing you a wonderful week..xo HHL

My Mercurial Nature November 1, 2011 at 4:58 PM

How am I just seeing this now? Okay, so it sounds like you should be hearing more soon. Meanwhile, that must've been SO scary!! I really hope you get great news back and are feeling yourself asap.

Julie November 3, 2011 at 4:28 PM

Have you checked any medication side effects? My dad is on depression medication and had an incident last year that appeared like a stoke. There was no medical evidence that a stroke had occurred so TIA was floated. They eventually decided it was a seizure-like side effect of his medication (which he has been stable on for years with absolutely no problems).

The Bipolar Diva November 3, 2011 at 8:28 PM

Yeah Julie, we've checked the side effects and nothing matches. I am on an anti seizure medication though.

Just Be Real November 6, 2011 at 3:41 AM

Again, appreciate what you share. Glad things turned out ok for you. I really enjoy how you express yourself Very transparent. Blessings.
