Distractions
Tuesday, February 1, 2011
Well I had my emergency meeting with my psychiatrist yesterday. Yeah, I had a bit of a crisis this weekend with all the changes in my life. She checked out my arms and did a run down on my medications. We deleted the xanex (tears) and ativan in favor of only using valium (yea me!).
She wants me to consider something called Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. I'm not really sure what it is and only looked it up today to get a link for it. I guess I need to look into it further. She said that things may come up in my therapy with her that I'll need coping skills for. Sigh. So much fun.
She also said I need distractions. Anyone willing to distract me? I love distractions!
Any of my bipolar peeps that don't have the link to my other blog, email me. It's more raw and a bit more racy than this one. I go into much more detail on there than I have the liberty to here. Oh well, you know me, raw and racy.
Vacation tomorrow! I simply cannot wait!

Hawaii isn't a big enough distraction?
I guess Hawaii isn't permanent.
Hmmm.
Need any more kids to watch? I have a few extra. That'll provide plenty of distraction.
Have a great trip.
Good luck with the medication changes! Will be praying for you!
Yes we know you and love you. Why else would we keep coming back?
Interesting that your shrink suggested DBT. Google "Borderline Personality Disorder" - that is one of the main "diagnoses" that DBT is used for. I'd ask her if that's a diagnosis she is considering for you. Therapists and psychiatrists have a responsibility to be informative and honest with you. BPD (Borderline Personality Disorder) is often found with the "other" BPD (Bipolar Disorder) - or it's referred to as a "comorbid" diagnosis. DBT is actually a very good treatment modality - keeps you grounded in the "here and now" and will teach you lots of useful skills ("mindfulness" is a really useful skill). Be an educated consumer - because you are a smart gal!! I hope you have a groovy time in Hawaii - with all of that SUNSHINE!!!! =)
I have been through that Dialetic Behavioral Therapy. It is a BITCH but I have to admit it did work for the most part. Basically you have to be held accountable for everything you do. Like with your cutting... you have to recognize that you yourself did it nobody else made you do it. Just you. A bitch to face head on, I tell you But you know what. That is one of the reasons why I stopped cutting, seriously.
I dont know if your psychiatrist will do this with you... but... they might make you sign a contract regarding cutting. If you cut, your relationship with the therapist is over. It depends on what you and the therapist agree on.
MY psychiatrist... geez, I cut one time and called him and he basically told me well what can he do? Its too late. You already cut, you broke our contract, I will not be talking to you for awhile. It was a slap in the face, I was stunned. But that worked for me. That forced me to learn other coping mechanisms.
My niece, who also went through DBT more extensively than I ever have... is doing very well with her cutting and stuff. I never did the group therapy thing, she did.
It was the hardest thing to do, but I promise you that in the long run, it will be beneficial more than you know. You just won't feel that way in the beginning.
If you have any QQ's or wanna talk about this with someone whos been thru it, email me! :) Love you!
No, I don't have Borderline Personality Disorder, just the bipolar II. Luckily it's mild. I guess she suspects there's a lot of childhood stuff going on somewhere in there that gets in the way sometimes.
Nikki, thank you so much. I just may take you up on that!
Yo.. what other blog....??
I will email you...
Shit.. you should just call me..
Hugs~

Cat, I emailed it to you :)
So sorry about the recent crisis Honey. Dealing with the childhood gunk is tough but important, you already know that. I'll be praying for you girly!
Your vacation will be a distraction for a while, the Valium will be too. I used to love Valium!
Hawaii is a big/huge distraction for you. Good luck on the medication and have fun in Hawaii.
I think You already invited me to your other blog. I'll check it out.

I finally talked my dr into giving me xanax for my anxiety after begging her for three years. I think I'd have to fight her if she tried to take them away from me! Hope the medicine changes don't screw with you too bad!
Good that you go in to see her Diva :)
As I understand it DBT is usually a treatment for people with Borderline Personality Disorder but it can be beneficial in treating bi-polar and depression as well. The group I'm in right now is a combo of CBT and DBT. I wish u were closer girlie. I have a binder full of info about this stuff.
Anyway, here is a link on the other BPD.

Keep on keeping on :)

I ran into your blog, and start following. I'm also a mom with bipolar and borderline personality disorder. Interesting to read how your illness shows in your life.
Thanks for sharing!
